Women's HERstory of the Month SPOTLIGHT: Dr. Fe del Mundo

In the heart of Women's History Month, Wicks & Bath Co, a Filipina-owned business deeply rooted in the values of resilience, innovation, and dedication, is proud to feature a monumental figure in the medical field, Dr. Fe del Mundo. Her remarkable journey from the rural landscapes of the Philippines to the hallowed halls of Harvard Medical School sets a compelling narrative of breaking barriers and pioneering advancements that have saved countless lives. As we delve into the life of Dr. Fe del Mundo, we not only celebrate her incredible achievements but also draw inspiration for our own journeys of making a difference in the world.

A Woman of Many Firsts

Fe del Mundo's story is one of relentless perseverance and groundbreaking achievements. Born in the Philippines in 1911, del Mundo carved a path that many at the time deemed impossible for a woman. Her academic brilliance and passion for medicine led her to become the first woman to attend Harvard Medical School. This remarkable feat was only the beginning of a lifetime of firsts that would cement her legacy in the annals of medical history.

Innovating Against the Odds

In 1941, amid the backdrop of a world at war and in a country grappling with limited resources, del Mundo's ingenuity came to the fore. She invented an incubator made of bamboo to save premature babies in rural areas of the Philippines without electricity. This invention, crafted from native laundry baskets and hot water bottles, was a testament to del Mundo's innovative spirit and her commitment to doing whatever was necessary to save lives.

A Legacy of Excellence and Service

Fe del Mundo's contributions to medicine and her country earned her numerous accolades and recognitions, each a testament to her skill, dedication, and humanitarian spirit. In 1947, she became the first Filipina certified as a Board Diplomat by the American Board of Pediatrics. Her trailblazing didn't stop there; she continued to break new ground, becoming the first Filipina and the first Asian elected president of the Medical Women’s International Association in 1962.

Her service and contributions were further recognized when she received the Elizabeth Blackwell Award for Outstanding Service to Mankind in 1966, was cited as an Outstanding Pediatrician and Humanitarian by the International Pediatric Association in 1977, and was declared a National Scientist of the Philippines in 1980, the first woman to achieve this honor.

Del Mundo's dedication to pediatrics and her innovative spirit were evident in her authorship of the Textbook of Pediatrics in 1982, a pivotal resource for medical students in the Philippines and abroad. Her lifelong commitment to improving children's health was honored with the rank of Bayani when she was awarded the Order of Lakandula in 2010 and posthumously conferred the Grand Collar of the Order of the Golden Heart in 2011.
